COSMIC MESSAGE

This picture, taken in Illinois, shows Comet Hyakutake's enormous tail. The green circle shows the size of the full moon for scale. The comet made its closest approach to Earth on March 25, 1996. It passed at about 40 times the Moon's distance, a close but not record-breaking encounter for a comet.
