NASA APOD · Royal Observatory, Edinburgh, Anglo-Australian Observatory
COSMIC MESSAGE

About 11,000 years ago, a star in the constellation Vela exploded. This event was likely visible to early humans. Today, the Vela supernova remnant marks the location of that explosion. This optical photograph shows a detailed view of the upper left part of the expanding spherical shock wave, as gas from the explosion interacts with the interstellar medium.
