Vela Supernova Remnant in X-ray
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
When a star explodes, it creates a fireball of hot gas that expands in all directions. As this gas slams into the interstellar medium, it heats up and glows in X-rays. The ROSAT satellite captured these X-rays, showing for the first time that the Vela supernova explosion was roughly spherical. Irregularities in the interstellar medium give Vela an uneven appearance.
