COSMIC MESSAGE

This is NGC 3628, a spiral galaxy seen almost perfectly edge-on. The dark band across its center is interstellar dust within the galaxy, absorbing the starlight behind it. NGC 3628 is part of the Leo Triplet, a group of galaxies about 35 million light-years away. Its core emits variable X-ray radiation, which may indicate the presence of a central black hole.
