COSMIC MESSAGE
Comet Hale-Bopp, seen here near the globular cluster M14, made its slow journey across the night sky in late 1996. It was just barely visible to the naked eye from dark locations. Because of its large coma, some astronomers speculated that Hale-Bopp's nucleus was unusually large. The comet would become much brighter in early 1997.
