Nebula Nova Cygni Turns On
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
This nebula, called Nova Cygni 1992, was not visible in older photographs. In 1992, a white dwarf star in Cygnus underwent a classical nova explosion, ejecting its outer layers. The intense light from this event illuminated a pre-existing gas cloud, exciting the hydrogen and causing the red emission we see. The actual gas expelled by the nova is a small red ball near the photograph's center.
