Aurora Over Circle, Alaska

NASA APOD · Dick Hutchinson
COSMIC MESSAGE

Aurora are caused by charged particles from the Sun interacting with Earth's atmosphere. This particular display was photographed over Circle, Alaska. These 'northern lights' add light to the sky and do not block background stars. From space, aurora glow in X-ray light as well as the visible spectrum.
