COSMIC MESSAGE
Comet Hale-Bopp became so bright in the morning sky that it was hard to miss. This photograph, taken west of Williston, North Carolina, shows its dominating presence above telephone poles along Highway 70. Just before sunrise, it was one of the brightest objects in the eastern sky. Its brilliance made it easily observable without a telescope.
