COSMIC MESSAGE

This image from the SOHO spacecraft's LASCO instrument shows a 'Sungrazer' comet arcing towards the Sun on December 23, 1996. LASCO uses an occulting disk to block the Sun's glare, allowing it to image the faint solar corona. The comet's coma is visible as it enters the bright equatorial solar wind region. Sungrazer comets are known for their close approaches to the Sun.
