Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 earned its 'string of pearls' nickname from its fragmented appearance. Jupiter's intense gravity tore the comet's original nucleus into pieces during a close encounter in 1992. The Hubble Space Telescope captured these fragments strung along the comet's orbital path. In July 1994, these pieces dramatically collided with Jupiter.
