On its way to study asteroid 433 Eros, the NEAR spacecraft flew past another asteroid, 253 Mathilde. This image shows Mathilde as a heavily cratered, very dark chunk of rock, roughly 60 kilometers across. Mathilde orbits the Sun in the main asteroid belt, between Mars and Jupiter.
