Vela Supernova Remnant in Optical

NASA APOD · Anglo-Australian Telescope Board
COSMIC MESSAGE

Around 11,000 years ago, a star in Vela exploded, creating the Vela supernova remnant. This explosion was likely visible to early humans. The image shows a detailed optical view of the expanding shock wave as it interacts with the interstellar medium. Gas from the exploded star flies outward, heating and illuminating the surrounding material.
