Echos of Supernova 1987A

NASA APOD · Anglo-Australian Telescope Board
COSMIC MESSAGE

Supernova 1987A exploded over a decade ago, but its light still reflects off nearby interstellar dust. These reflections create rings, like ripples in a pond, that appear to expand outward from the supernova's original location. This image was created by comparing photos taken before and after the explosion, revealing these expanding light echoes.
