Moving Echoes Around SN 1987A

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

The light from Supernova 1987A, a star that exploded in 1987, continues to travel through space. When it hits a cloud of dust, the dust lights up, creating a 'light echo.' The photo shows how these echoes appear to move over time as the light travels further into the dust cloud. The lower image, taken later, shows the illuminated dust cloud farther to the left.
