Solar Magnetic Bananas

These unusual banana-shaped loops are a computer-generated snapshot of the Sun's magnetic field. Using data from the U.S. Solar Vector Magnetograph and the Yohkoh X-Ray Telescope, scientists visualize how surfaces of constant magnetic field strength loop through the Sun's corona. These loops connect regions of magnetic activity, such as sunspots, on the solar surface.
