NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

Comet Hale-Bopp, photographed here above the Dolomite mountains in Italy, was a spectacular sight in 1997. It displayed two distinct tails. The blue ion tail forms when solar wind particles interact with ionized gas from the comet, while the white dust tail is made of dust particles pushed away by sunlight.
