These high-resolution, false-color images show the Galactic center in high-energy X-ray and gamma-ray light. They are the result of a 3,000-hour exposure by the French SIGMA telescope on the Russian GRANAT spacecraft. The X-ray picture reveals a cluster of sources, likely binary star systems, releasing enormous amounts of energy from the central bulge of our Milky Way.
