If you point a large telescope at nothing, you get a cosmic wallpaper rich in distant galaxies. The New Technology Telescope SUSI Deep Field isolated a small patch of sky with no bright objects. A very long exposure revealed many faint objects usually washed out by foreground light. Galaxies as faint as magnitude 26, often irregularly shaped, were found.
