COSMIC MESSAGE
The North Pole of Mars is covered by layers of ice and dust, deposited over millions of years. This wide-angle color view, taken by the Mars Global Surveyor, shows rippled, eroded terrain. Pinkish seasonal carbon dioxide frost covers the polar cap, with dark sand dunes bordering it. The image was captured on September 12, early spring for Northern Mars.
