Radio, The Big Ear, And The Wow! Signal

NASA APOD · Rick Scott
COSMIC MESSAGE

Ohio State University's radio telescope, "The Big Ear," was one of the first and largest listeners for signals from space. It was designed by John Kraus and relied on Earth's rotation to help scan the sky. In 1977, The Big Ear detected the "Wow!" signal, a strong, narrow-band radio signal that remains unexplained. It was a tantalizing hint of possible extraterrestrial intelligence.
