The SOHO spacecraft, designed to observe the Sun, has also become the most successful comet hunter in history. Its LASCO instrument, which blocks the Sun's bright disk to view the corona, has discovered over 100 comets. Many of these are 'sungrazers,' comets that pass very close to the Sun.
