Filaments In The Cygnus Loop

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

These delicate filaments are shocked interstellar gas, part of an expanding blast wave from a star that exploded. The Hubble Space Telescope recorded this close-up in 1997. It shows a small portion of the Cygnus Loop, a supernova remnant. The shock front is moving at 170 kilometers per second, glowing as it sweeps through the interstellar medium.
