X-Ray Ring Around SN1987A
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
The Chandra X-ray Observatory captured this one light-year wide ring of plasma, heated to ten million degrees. It is the expanding blast wave from Supernova 1987A, which exploded in 1987. White contour lines from the Hubble Space Telescope's optical image show the innermost visible ring. The X-ray emission and the optical ring line up, showing the shock wave's interaction with the star's previous outflows.
