Vela Pulsar: Neutron Star-Ring-Jet
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
This Chandra X-ray Observatory image focuses on the Vela pulsar, the collapsed core of a star located within the Vela supernova remnant, about 800 light-years away. The Vela pulsar is a neutron star, only about 12 miles in diameter but more massive than the Sun, spinning ten times a second. Its powerful electric and magnetic fields accelerate particles, creating the observed rings and jets of high-energy particles.
