Comet LINEAR, designated C/1999 S4, broke apart as it approached the Sun in July 2000. The Hubble Space Telescope captured this image of it shedding a large piece of its crust. The comet's nucleus completely disrupted, leaving behind an elongated trail of material orbiting the Sun.
