M51, the Whirlpool Galaxy, is a classic spiral galaxy visible in the constellation Canes Venatici. It is 23 million light years distant and 65 thousand light years across. The smaller galaxy below and to the left is actually behind M51, with its light obscured by dust in a foreground spiral arm.
