The largest sunspot group of the past ten years, Active Region 9393, crossed the surface of the Sun late last month and early this month. The number of active regions on the Sun is currently high because the Sun is reaching the maximum of its 11-year cycle of magnetic activity. This time-lapse sequence shows AR 9393 evolving from March 27 to April 2, growing to over 10 times the size of Earth.
