Young Martian Terrain

Mars's mid-latitude terrain shows mysterious pits, ridges, and gullies. This area is geologically young, perhaps only 100,000 years old. One hypothesis suggests that water ice, once saturating the ground, sublimated away, leaving fragile, cake-like sand that wind then sculpted into these formations.
