A Cloud Shadow Sunrise

NASA APOD · Kee Hinckley
COSMIC MESSAGE

Sometimes, a cloud can cast a dark ray into the sky, like this one seen over the Florida Everglades. This happens when a cloud near the horizon blocks sunlight from reflecting off the air behind it. It's the inverse of crepuscular rays, where sunlight streams through gaps in clouds.
