Comet Ikeya-Zhang Brightens

NASA APOD · Gerald Rhemann
COSMIC MESSAGE

Comet Ikeya-Zhang brightened in March 2002, becoming just visible to the unaided eye. Observers were optimistic it would grow even brighter. This composite color image, captured with a wide-field telescope, shows the comet's bright, condensed coma and subtle structures in its developing tail. The bluish tail stretches five degrees across a star-filled background.
