Newborn stars are forming in the Eagle Nebula. These stars are contracting within dense pillars of gas and dust. Their intense radiation causes the surrounding material to evaporate. This image, taken by the Hubble Space Telescope in near-infrared light, penetrates much of the thick dust. It reveals the giant structures, light-years in length, informally known as the Pillars of Creation.
