Hoag's Object, discovered in 1950, is an unusual extragalactic object. It features an outer ring of bright blue stars and a central ball of much redder, older stars. Between them is a gap that appears almost completely dark. How this ring galaxy formed remains unknown, though similar objects have been identified.
