M16 Close Up

M16, also known as The Eagle Nebula, is a star cluster about two million years old, surrounded by natal clouds of dust and glowing gas. This image uses the Hubble palette to highlight cosmic sculptures, famously captured in close-ups by the Hubble Space Telescope. These dense, dusty columns, known as elephant trunks or Pillars of Creation, are light-years long and are contracting gravitationally to form new stars.
