Just as a prism splits visible light into a rainbow, the Chandra X-ray Observatory can create X-ray rainbows. It uses 540 finely-ruled gold gratings to spread out X-rays by energy. This allows astronomers to see the X-ray spectrum, which provides clues about the universe's most energetic phenomena. The digital detectors then record these high-energy 'colors'.
