Venus, the second planet from the Sun, is a common waypoint for spacecraft heading to the outer Solar System. Spacecraft use a "gravity assist" maneuver, swinging by Venus to gain energy and save fuel for later in their journey. This colorized image was taken by the Jupiter-bound Galileo spacecraft after its gravity assist flyby in February 1990.
