The center of the Lagoon Nebula is a busy region of star formation. Extreme stellar winds and intense starlight have sculpted long, funnel-shaped clouds, each about half a light-year long. The tremendously bright star Herschel 36 illuminates the area, while vast walls of dust hide other hot, young stars.
