M17, also known as the Omega or Swan Nebula, is a star-forming region in Sagittarius about 5,000 light-years away. The Chandra X-ray Observatory shows many massive young stars in the pink central region. These stars sculpt the glowing gas cloud into its bowed and hollowed-out shape.
