As the Sun sets, the Earth's shadow rises from the east. This daily event is often overlooked in favor of the colorful western horizon. On August 9, astronomer Steve Mandel captured this view of the shadow rising from his driveway in California. He was looking east toward Fremont Peak as a nearly full Moon was rising.
