What causes those strange clouds stretching out from the lakes? Cold air moving over warm water creates bands of lake-effect snow. These rising bands of moistened, warmed air alternate with clear bands of falling cold air. This process can create hundreds of centimeters of snow, far more than in areas just a hundred kilometers away.
