A Sun Halo Over Tennessee
NASA APOD · Vydor
COSMIC MESSAGE
Sometimes, the Sun appears to be viewed through a giant lens, but it's actually millions of tiny ice crystals. As water freezes in the upper atmosphere, these flat, six-sided crystals form. Each crystal acts like a miniature lens, refracting sunlight into a halo around the Sun, as seen in this image taken near Nashville, Tennessee.
