COSMIC MESSAGE
This cosmic cloud, known as the California Nebula or NGC 1499, drifts through the Orion Arm of the Milky Way galaxy. It echoes the outline of California on the west coast of the United States. The nebula is about 100 light-years long and glows with the red light of hydrogen atoms. This light is emitted as electrons recombine after being stripped away by energetic stars.
