This image, taken by the robotic rover Spirit, shows a Martian dust devil swirling across the landscape. Scientists identified this subtle white wisp by comparing it to previous images of the same area. While fresh dust devil tracks have been seen on Mars before, directly observing one up close was a surprising discovery. These atmospheric phenomena are similar to terrestrial dust devils, but on Mars, they can reach impressive sizes.
