Sunset Over Gusev Crater
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
What would a sunset on Mars look like? The robotic rover Spirit was deployed to Gusev crater to observe the Sun dipping below the crater's distant rim. On Earth, red sunsets are caused by blue light being scattered out of sunlight by atmospheric molecules, and by scattering off impurities like volcanic dust. Mars's atmosphere, thinner and dustier, creates a distinctly different sunset color palette, often appearing blue around the setting sun.
