Snake in the Dark

NASA APOD · Gary Stevens
COSMIC MESSAGE

Dark nebulae, like this one known as the Snake Nebula or Barnard 72, wind through a rich field of stars in Ophiuchus. These are not empty spaces, but dense clouds of gas and dust that block the light from stars behind them. This region lies toward the center of our Milky Way Galaxy.
