The Matter of the Bullet Cluster
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
The Bullet Cluster, 1E 0657-56, is 3.4 billion light-years away. This composite image shows its matter distribution. Optical data reveals individual galaxies, but their total mass is less than the hot X-ray emitting gas clouds, shown in red. Even more mass, shown in blue, represents the distribution of dark matter. This cluster provides strong evidence for dark matter's existence.
