The California Nebula, NGC 1499, is a cosmic cloud that, by chance, resembles the outline of California. This emission nebula glows red from hydrogen atoms recombining with electrons. It stretches about 100 light-years long and sits 1,500 light-years away in the Orion Arm of our Milky Way galaxy.
