MWC 922: The Red Square Nebula

NASA APOD · Peter Tuthill (Sydney U.) and James Lloyd (Cornell)
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Red Square Nebula, MWC 922, surrounds a hot star system, and its square shape puzzles astronomers. This image combines infrared data from the Hale Telescope and the Keck-2 Telescope. One leading idea is that the central star or stars expelled cones of gas during a late stage of development, which then formed these striking square patterns.
