The exoplanet HD 209458b is so close to its star that its atmosphere is boiling away into space. Astronomers have claimed to detect water vapor in the gases escaping the planet. If true, this would be the first discovery of water on a planet outside our solar system. HD 209458b is a 'hot Jupiter' type of planet, a gas giant orbiting very close to its star.
