COSMIC MESSAGE

The Cat's Eye Nebula, NGC 6543, is one of the sky's best-known planetary nebulae. Its familiar outlines are in the brighter central region of this wide-angle view. This composite image reveals the nebula's extremely faint outer halo, over five light-years across. Planetary nebulae are the final phase in the life of a sun-like star, about 3,000 light-years away.
