COSMIC MESSAGE
M83, also called the Southern Pinwheel, is one of the closest and brightest spiral galaxies we can see. You can spot its majestic spiral arms with binoculars in the constellation Hydra. Discovered 250 years ago, we now know M83 is a barred spiral galaxy, much like our own Milky Way. It is about 15 million light-years away and is part of a galaxy group that includes Centaurus A.
